Maruti Suzuki Alto, the most popular car in the Indian market, has become the largest selling car in the world by driving highest volumes in calendar year 2010. By clocking the highest sales during this year, the small car Alto left far behind its global rivals such as Fiat Uno and Volkswagen Golf.

The small car is still a darling of the Indian middle class due to its price, fuel economy and reliability.

The total sales of the Suzuki Alto stood at 3,00,000 units during this year, accounting a 25 percent jump over the units sold in the calendar year 2009.

Since its launch in the country in September 2000, the Alto series has been among the most sought after cars in the Indian market.

Alto has maintained its best-selling position in spite of the launch of new small cars by global auto majors. It had become India’s first car to sell more than 200,000 units in one financial year.
